The first order of the day was a boat excursion in Geibikei Gorge-it was a leisurely 90 minute trip into beautiful nature on a nice sunny day. It akes about an hour to get to the boats and the trains only run on the hour in this par of the country. It seemed as though many local tourists were driving cars, but I think there were buses from Ichinoseki station as well.
After the boat cruise it was onto to the capital city-Morioka.
It is traditionally followed by egg drop soup-as I found out at my local Tokyo version of the dish.
The famous cherry tree breaking rock in central Morioka.
Iwate Park in the center of the city-it has the old castle ruins there.
Brew Pub Baeren on the river.
Not hungry enough for the wanko soba challenge (patrons are cheered on to eat 100 small bowls of soba)-so off to Bankaraya-a local izakaya with several local nihonshu selections. I realized that I missed out on some great seafood as well as there is coast to Iwate as well-despite the fact I was inland-they are also known for having tasty oysters-maybe another time in the future?
