I recently came across an article on the career of British director Alan Clarke and saw some interesting films that I had missed over the years. I was intrigued that Scum was listed as being made for TV in 1977 with Ray Winstone as the lead actor-he is unidentifiable from his present state.. However, the BBC banned the ultra violent and controversial film. SO CLarke re-made it as film in 1979. I managed to track down the original 1977 version. It is a film about the abuses that took place at a reform school for minors in the late 70s. Violence seems to be a defining aspect of Clarke's films, I had previously seen Made in Britain with an equally young Tim Roth about a violent skinhead and I look forward to seeing Clarke's 1989 film with Gary Oldman, The Firm about middle class hooligans who are addicted to the violence associated with supporting their local football team.
