What to make of Nicholas Winding Refn's film Only God Forgives (2013)? I really enjoyed Drive, and this has elements that were successfully employed in that film: great cinematography, inspired music, and Ryan Gosling. But those things cannot save this film from outlandish characters in Gosling and his mother played with relish by Kristin Scott Thomas. I also liked the fact that the set the film in Bangkok, Thailand with all the exoticness and filth that the city has to offer, but I feel as though he wasted the opportunity. Furthermore, the comic book-like violence is so over the top that it detracts from the film overall. An interesting experiment, but it seems as though Refn is capable of more. I will be curious to see what he does next.
