I remember one of the earliest cultural lessons I received was that Japanese always vigorously deny a compliment, so I'm not really suprised that the language learners overdo it a bit. I remember being shown a dialogue in which a Japanese person says 'iie, chigaimasu' (or similar) - and so naturally I assumed this was as direct as I should be. I suspect providing stereotypical cross-cultural examples is often responsible for exaggerated or unnatural behaviour by language learners the world over, although I think in this case Japanese might be somewhat impressed by an enthusiastic attempt at Japanese style modesty.
