THe Makioka Sisters (1983) directed by Kon Ichikawa is an effusive adaptation of Junichiro Tanizaki's celebrated novel. It has some great depictions of the changing of the seasons and wonderful kimonos as Ichikawa has changed the family's business to that of kimono making. it is essentially the history of a family at a turning point in Japanese history in the years leading up to the Pacific War. It has a fine ensemble cast including future director Junzo Itami. This Criterion edition features a new high-definition digital restoration and a booklet featuring an essay by film scholar Audie Bock.
