Hainan Chi-Fan

Img_1283

Hainan chicken rice is the unofficial food of Singapore, and it is rare to see Singaporean restaurants in Tokyo, but there's one, Hainan Chi-Fan, near Nihon University in Suidobashi and I had lunch there the other day. tasty, but a little on the expensive side for lunch. Also, I recently saw an episode of No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain, where he was taken to task for not having had this Singaporean staple prior to an appearance there a few years back.

Hainan Chicken Rice is associated with Singapore for some reason - rather than Hainan - which would be the more obvious choice, and where I thought it was from. I reckon there must be a few Hainanese who emigrated to Singapore once upon a time.

In case you complained about me never following your carefully placed links (as usual) I decided to check the Wikipedia entry you included and the dish does have a connection with Hainan after all.

I think we already had this discussion when I was posting about my trip to Singapore a coupla years back...
